10 foods toxic to cats — check before feeding

10 foods toxic to cats

Cats metabolise differently than humans — many foods safe for us can damage their liver, kidneys or nervous system. Here are the most common culprits.

1. Chocolate

Contains theobromine — toxic to cats. Dangerous dose: 20 mg/kg. Symptoms: agitation, tachycardia, vomiting.

2. Onion, garlic, green onion

Destroy red blood cells → haemolytic anaemia. All forms: raw, cooked, dehydrated, powder.

3. Milk and dairy

Adult cats are lactose-intolerant. Causes diarrhoea.

4. Grapes and raisins

Exact mechanism unknown, but causes acute kidney failure. Avoid completely.

5. Alcohol

Lethal in small doses. Beer, wine, liquor — all of them.

What to do if your cat ingested something toxic

  1. Do NOT induce vomiting without veterinary advice — some substances cause more damage on the way back
  2. Call +40 21 555 0911 with: what was eaten, how much, when
  3. Bring the packaging to the clinic

Quick checklist

Put a magnet on the fridge with this list — it saves lives.
